New Resident Packet

Dear Neighbor,

Springfield Township is a wonderful place to live.  On behalf of Springfield’s Democratic Party, we are delighted that you and your family have wanted to make Springfield Township your home, and we welcome you.

Springfield Township is a community of exemplary schools, history and community spirit.   The township includes the vibrant neighborhoods of Erdenheim, Flourtown, Wyndmoor, and parts of Oreland, North Hills, Glenside, Lafayette Hill, Fort Washington, and Laverock.

To ease your settling into Springfield, we put together for you this Welcome to Springfield packet.   We hope you will find this information helpful, regardless of your political party affiliation.  Enclosed are:

Four pages listing the contact information for your various government representatives and officials and township service organizations;

Two Voter Registration Application forms  --  note the deadlines to have your Applications into the Montgomery County Courthouse which are listed on the enclosed Dates Sheet.  If your family has more than two adults, please contact us so we can drop off more Voter Registration forms for you.  Please be sure to register promptly!

A letter from Joelle Kleinman, Springfield’s Tax Collector, explaining the availability of the Homestead Exclusion Assessment together with the application form for your use;

Dates Sheet, listing important civic deadlines and too, our Democratic Party’s events; and

On the left inside cover, we listed your ward and precinct, and the name and location of the polling place where you vote.

Our local Democratic Party works energetically to maintain and improve the quality of life for all Springfield residents and has fun, too, as you can see by the social events listed on the Dates Sheet.  If you would like more information about upcoming elections, meetings and events, and/or if you would like to receive periodic email updates from us, please email us or call.  We will be happy to talk with you answer any questions you may have.  We invite you to come to any of our meetings and events.

Joelle Kleinman

Springfield Township Tax Collector

My name is Joelle Kleinman and I currently serve as the Springfield Township Tax Collector.  I would like to extend a warm welcome to the neighborhood and would be happy to chat with you about any questions you have regarding your real estate taxes.  Here is some general information so you know what to expect from my office throughout the year:

  • Each year I send two annual real estate tax bills, the County/Township tax bill in February and the School tax bill in July.

  • I accept several payment methods, including by mail, in-person or online.

  • Many taxpayers rely on their mortgage company to make their tax payments.  If your mortgage company holds an escrow account for you, you will still receive the tax bill, please send your mortgage company a copy of your tax bill as soon as you receive it.

  • For both tax bills you may receive a 2% discount for paying early and a 10% fee for paying late so please pay close attention to the due dates.

  • You may be eligible for the Homestead Exclusion which is Property Tax Relief offered by Mongomery County.  I have included more information about the Homestead Exclusion as well as information on how to apply below.

The Homestead Exclusion Assessment

If you own your home and live in your home, you are eligible for Homestead Reduction.  All you need to do is fill out the enclosed form, sign it, and mail it to the Montgomery County Board of Assessment Appeals by March 1st.

  • The Homestead Exclusion is deducted from the School Tax bill, for those taxpayers who qualify.

  • It is identical for every property owner who qualifies. It is not based on the value of the property or the age or income of the property owner.

  • The Homestead/Farmstead Application must be received on or before the March 1st deadline and be approved by the County Board of Assessment.

  • It does not apply to the County/Township bill that is sent in February.

  • The amount of the Reduction varies each year, depending on how much the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania allots to the School District for that tax year and how many residents qualify that year.  The calculation is a straight division - the amount received from Pennsylvania is divided by the number of eligible property owners.

  • You do not need to apply every year. Once you apply, unless the State and/or County changes the law in the future, you are automatically on the list each year.  However, if your circumstances change, you must notify the Board of Assessment Appeals.  For example, if you move out of your home, but still own it; if you transfer the title of the property to a family member but continue to live there; if the ownership is changed to the name of a company or corporation, etc., you may no longer qualify.

I hope this information is helpful but if you have further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me by phone or email.  All my contact information, including my website, can be found at the bottom of this page.

Thank you

Joelle Kleinman, Tax Collector, Springfield Township
